photo of Karl Eric LeitzelJoin professional artist and teacher Karl Eric Leitzel for an exciting couple of days exploring your creative side in the company of other creative types. The main focus will be on painting with a looseness that you may have had trouble achieving. We will work on, as the lyrics of the Bob Seger song say, "what to leave in and what to leave out", as well as not being afraid of thick paint and large brushes. The demo painting by Karl will mainly be in alkyd oils, but standard oils and acrylics are also fine for you to bring. Karl is a musician as well as a full-time artist, and enthusiastically promotes the idea that all art springs from the same source, merely taking shape through different tools and skills. So, feel free to bring any musical instrument you may play as well as poetry or prose to share.

The setting is the gorgeous Brush Mountain Lodge, situated on a mountaintop overlooking beautiful Penns Valley. The spacious timber-framed lodge creates an ideal environment for relaxing and getting in touch with your creative side, without the usual distractions of home. Painters can also bring a non-painting spouse, partner, or friend to enjoy the social aspects of the retreat and participate in the informal music-making and other sharing, as well as explore the beautiful surrounding area during the day. Even if you live nearby, consider staying over as a way to get away from the usual cares of home and fully immerse yourself in relaxing creativity.

The art instruction will be geared for intermediate-level painters, but those with very limited painting experience will still be able to enjoy the workshop. Participants will bring their own art supplies, with either acrylics or oils recommended, and a supply list will be furnished for those wishing to outfit specifically for the retreat. Any participants who play a musical instrument are encouraged to bring whatever you have.

Subject matter for painting will depend on the weather and preferences of the group. There are beautiful views from the spacious decks, and we will certainly do some still life work in the lodge. Working from photos or trying our hand at quick sketch portraits of one another are also possibilities. If the weather allows, we may take a short field trip or two for plein air painting, so a portable easel is a plus.
