Blue Sky Over Sagebrush, New Mexico
Alkyd oil on
canvas  30" by 30"
2006
Framed $
1100

After painting "Navajo Riders of the Purple Sage", and having debating for several days whether to add the riders to the otherwise completed landscape, I decided to return to the theme of the wide open, empty spaces of the New Mexico high desert. Empty, though, is a relative term. I can honestly say that the times I spent just standing under the open sky in this vast landscape, with only the constant, steady wind for sound and sage, jackrabbits, and God for company, felt as full and complete as any I've ever experienced. The painting needed nothing else.

Look to the Heavens
Alkyd oil on panel  24" by 30", 2006
SOLD

The setting in this piece is looking east toward the old Swamp Church, located in Gregg Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania.

The title has multiple thoughts and meanings behind it. As it always the case in art, the viewer will ultimately choose what meaning to give to the work itself as well as the title.

For me though, the focal point of the piece is certainly the vivid sunrise sky, even though a lone building in a landscape piece would normally draw the most attention. In a spiritual sense, while the building of worship and the circle of friends and neighbors within can be a great source of strength and stability in life, the center of attention ultimately needs to be on things above, on God himself.

The title is also part of the beginning of chapter 40, verse 26 in the Old Testament book of Isaiah.

Sometimes the light is so breathtaking that it hardly looks possible. Those times are, in particular, the ones that an artist must try to convey. This farm is located along Rte. 192 between Centre Hall and Madisonburg, in central Pennsylvania.

Art is not just about recording what was or what is. Sometimes it is primarily about suggesting what might be, or starting a visual sentence that the viewer has to complete, each in their own way, born out of their own life story and their emotional response to the work before them.
