Backroads

A collection of pieces that don't fit into the landscape or plein air categories and celebrate the slower pace of rural life today or in times past.

This piece is an experimental departure for me, but was a blast to do. The basic painting was created by quickly painting the raw essence of the animal in thick acrylic colors on a panel, then placing a canvas panel against the initial painting and pounding it tight against before lifting it off, transferring some of the paint to the second panel. I did this several times until I got the effect I was after. The rest was a matter of adding touches and tints here and there by brush.

I chose this unorthodox (for me) approach because I wanted to capture mass, form, and energetic color; and avoid getting bogged down in unnecessary detail. I like the result and expect to do more like this in the future, including some larger pieces.
